What is a Visa check card?

A Visa check card is a type of “debit” card that looks similar to a credit card but acts like a check because the purchase amount is deducted from the cardholder’s checking account. A debit card is a bankcard used to make an electronic withdrawal from funds on deposit in a bank, as in purchasing goods or obtaining cash advances.

Do I choose Debit or Credit?

The Tri-State Bank Visa Check Card offers you the option to choose either one. If you choose “debit”, the funds are almost instantly deducted from your account. Choosing “credit” will place a temporary hold on the account until the merchant processes the purchase. In some cases choosing “credit” will also allow you to make small purchases without a signature. Only those “credit” purchases are covered by Visa’s Zero liability policy. One benefit to having the option to choose “debit” or “credit”- should one system not function properly the card allows you to the option of choosing the other. For example, if the “credit” system is not working properly you may ask the merchant to try “debit” and vice versa. There may be other benefits to choosing “credit.” Click here Visa Check Card Product for more information on the Visa Check Card product.

What happens if I am declined, but I know I have money in my account?

There may be times when the system is not functioning properly. With your new Check Card, you now have the option to ask them to try using it as a debit or credit. If Debit fails ask them to try it as a credit and vice versa. Debit transactions and credit transaction usually operate on two different systems. Debits are like getting money from the ATM, it comes out immediately and in some cases you can get cash back with your purchase. Credit purchased may temporarily post to your account, and take several days to officially appear on your account.

What happens if my account is overdrawn?

While we strongly encourage you to watch your account carefully, there may be times when your account is overdrawn. Keep in mind, approvals of transactions are based on your balance at the time of the transaction and may not consider any checks you have written or purchases where the merchant has not processed the purchase. Therefore it may be possible for you to be overdrawn even though your transaction was approved. Anytime you are overdrawn NSF fees apply.

Why does it take 15 business days for my card to arrive?

The cards are produced out of town and processed in batched cycles. Unfortunately if you enroll after a cycle ends, it may take a little longer to get your card processed. Please know that we will do everything possible to get your card to you as soon as possible, but please notify us if it has been more than 15 days so that we may check the status of your card.

Can I get a check card with the Direct Deposit Transaction Account (DDT)?
